My Trip to Basel
How did I get there? $30 flight from Stansted to Basel :)
Where did I stay? Generation YMCA Hostel. Overall, I had a good experience. The staff & facility was quite nice. However, there was a mix of people in the hostel that isn't ideal for 20 somethings. There were a lot of children & while I was there, apparently they had schools staying there. This made the common area vibes a little weird, haha. It was a bit further away from the downtown center, which makes sense. The neighborhood is quite nice & parts of it feels just like home. The location is actually pretty convenient, about 2 blocks from the rail station.
Where / how did I work? The hostel's internet was not the best so I could only get a limited amount of work done while there. I came across a coworking space, Rhizom, that was just a short walk from the hostel, in the direction of the downtown area. I had a wonderful experience there and miss it. I met both co-founders, who were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The space was beautifully designed. I got to work there for two days.
What did I eat? Unfortunately, because the cost of food is insane, I only indulged in one good meal. I found a nice, yet casual, Thai restaurant and had a delicious chicken dish with a local beer and lemongrass iced tea. Funny story: I used my credit card to pay & when I looked at my transactions a few days later, I saw they accidentally added an extra "3" when they typed the amount into the machine. I didn't even notice when I signed the bill. Luckily, my credit card fixed it no problem. My $334 meal turned to $34... whewwwww!
Best experience? Walking along the river, everyone was out hanging out, grilling out, drinking beer and enjoying the weather. It was so cool!
Would I recommend / go back? There was definitely something about this city that I really liked. I think it's a college town, so there's a lot of young people. If Richmond, VA had a Swiss cousin, this might be the place. However, I'm not sure if I'd go back because I didn't find that there was a lot to do. I've heard Lucerne & Interlaken are beautiful, so I'd go there first.
